Adrenocortical cancer research at the University of Sydney

Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra ACT Bridge to Bridge walk to support adrenal cortical cancer research at the University of Sydney.

In March 2013, I faced the greatest challenge of my life.  I was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma (ACC). ACC is a rare and aggressive form of cancer. It affects only one in a million people and unfortunately, most patients do not receive a good prognosis. The rarity of this cancer means that most doctors have not seen it before and, in many cases, they are unable to diagnose until the later stages. There is very little funding for research.

After last year's amazingly successful ACC Walk for a Cure up Mt Kosciuszko, this year we are going back to basics with a Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra ACT Bridge to Bridge Walk on Sunday 19 May 2019. This is to raise awareness and much-needed funds for research into ACC. For the fifth year in a row, the funds we raise will be used for the University of Sydney's ACC research, which is currently led by Professor Stan Sidhu and his team.

We hope you can all join us for a lovely walk, a chance to win some amazing raffle prizes (for more information contact accwalkcanberra@gmail.com) and a sausage sizzle at the nearby BBQs afterward.

Details of the walk can be found below.

Show your support and share

As usual, we won’t nominate an amount for you to register for the event. Instead, if you would like to donate you can nominate an amount that suits you or your family. Large or small, every gift matters and will make an impact on ACC sufferers and their families. If you are not in a position to give, you can still help by sharing our project with your friends and family through social media and your networks. All donations $2 and above are tax deductible. Thank you.

WALK DETAILS

The walk will be held on Sunday 19 May at 11 am.

  • Time – 10.30-10:45 am arrival for the walk to start at 11 am
  • RSVP - accwalkcanberra@gmail.com
  • Meeting point - King's Park (near the National Carillon at Lake Burley Griffin) - at the BBQ/toilets area across the road from the HMAS Canberra Memorial.
  • Parking - car parks are located at the Carillon, the Boundless park, the Russell defense area, and Blundell’s cottage
  • What to wear– something weather appropriate – with a lot or little bit of aqua, as this is the ACC cure colour.
  • Waiver– although we aimed to keep this an informal walk due to a large number of people in a public space we have decided that a simple waiver form is required to minimise any liability. We will have this on the day for you to sign.
  • After party – refreshments and a sausage sizzle will be on offer at the BBQ area just up from the Carillon towards the Boundless Park. Please let us know if you will not be partaking for catering purposes.
  • Photography – we are hoping to get some great shots of the walk.

In the event that the weather is wet, the walk will still happen (unless it is a torrential downpour!)
